Comans of Rathgar was established in early 1958 by the Coman family. Still a family run lounge and bar Comans if very much at the heart of Rathgar.
The site on which Comans sits was once the local supermarket with a small pub at the front of it. The family began by bottling their own stout-Guinness and soon became the bottling suppliers to the local pubs. This has grown to the well known Comans Wholesale that services pubs and clubs across Dublin.
The family introduced food to the pub in the late 1960's and this has remained an important focus to the business ever since. In 1970 the supermarket was closed and Comans lounge/bar was opened. In 2000 Rathgar watched as the Bottlers Bank was designed and open its doors to the welcoming community.
The Bottlers' Bank Bar has become one of Rathgar secret jems. This site was once home to the Munster and Leinster Bank which is now located at AIB Bank, only across the road. After the bank left, the building became a cleaners and was redeveloped into the bar in 2000. Still today, the area where the ladies and gents bathrooms are located, used to be the banks old vault.
In May of 2005 the old lounge was closed for a refurbishment and reopened its doors in July of 2005. This new modern, chique lounge has been welcomed by new and old customers alike. The warm, friendly atmosphere is perfect for lunch or dinner with the kitchens opening at 12pm until 9pm.
