Here, at Younges, The Ragg, Bouladuff, Thurles, Co Tipperary, we are a family-run pub, restaurant & function rooms establishment serving food, drink and entertainment 7 days a week, 363 days a year. We are located on the Nenagh/Borrisoleigh Road, out of Thurles, past the Race Course and straight on, you can’t miss us as we are well signposted!
The Ragg is personally managed and run by us, Donal, Rose & Rosemary Younge and we are in our 15th year of looking after local and visitors alike to a very high standard.
We are the perfect stopping-off point for great food, great drink, great parties or functions, great craic!.
The original pub was established in the 1800′s and has evolved since to the premises that exists now. We have a picture of the old pub over the fireplace from the 1900′s.
The pub and the area got it’s name during the Civil War when the local ladies used to hang a rag from a window to warn their menfolk that the enemy were in the area. An extra G has been added over the years.
There is another story that tells of a sheebeen (illegal drinking house) on the spot where the Ragg primary school is now. It is said that the old lady who owned the house would put a red rag out the top window when she would have a supply of poitin in stock. Well, that’s what we have been told anyway! We believe that the original name of the townsland was ‘Gortragmore’ as was documented on an account by O’Sullivan Beara of his journey through Tipperary. This is probably as near to the real story as we will get!
